The First Bath

A look back at the day our son had his very first bath in the NICU, and how such a simple moment became one of our most meaningful memories.

His first bath is a moment I’ll never forget.

By the time we reached that milestone, we were already deep into our routine of scrubbing in, watching monitors, and learning what every small movement meant. But a bath felt different. It felt like something normal, something every parent gets to experience. And yet for us, it came wrapped in wires, careful hands, and a room full of quiet hope.

The nurses prepared everything with the kind of tenderness that still stays with me. Warm water. Soft cloths. A tiny warming lamp glowing above him. The nurse moved slowly, talking us through each step, always treating him like the fragile but determined little fighter he was.

Seeing him without all the usual layers of tape and blankets felt almost surreal. He looked impossibly small but peaceful, as if he knew he was being cared for in a special way. The water ran over his skin, and his whole body softened. His breathing steadied, and without the monitors connected, the room felt calm in a way we rarely experienced.

We didn’t get to pick up a camera and film the entire bath the way many parents do. Instead, we watched with full attention, taking in every second. The tiny curl of his toes. The gentle way the nurse supported his head. The slow blink he gave, almost like the warm water felt familiar.

It wasn’t just a bath. It was a glimpse of what life might look like outside the NICU. A reminder that even in a room full of machines and alarms, simple moments like this could still happen.

The second the warm water was gone, he lifted his tiny hands and let out a cry, letting us know he wasn’t ready for the moment to end. Once he was dried off, dressed, and wrapped back in his blanket, he settled in again. His whole face softened and he gave us what looked like the very beginning of a smile, a quiet sign that he felt safe.
